It’s always exciting when we get accepted to a school we have always dreamed to go to. When I got accepted to school in the states that was exactly my sentiments, I felt like finally my dreams were becoming a reality.
The feeling then turns to anxiety of what I’m going to do next? It finally hits that you are actually leaving everything behind; family, friends and packing all your life into a suitcase.
Not knowing what to expect is a terrifying experience, while its amazing and exciting life can be challenging in a new country. Here are things you need to know to prepare for your studies abroad.
Apply for a Student visa
You got your letter of acceptance, next step is applying for student Visa. In most cases , the school you applied for will give you a guideline.
Look for Housing
Congratulations! If you are on this step that means you got your Visa approved. Yay! (if not bookmark the page). As a college student this gives you a real opportunity to live away from home, you can choose to either live on-campus or of-campus.
When I first hard of that being an international student, I didn’t really understand what that meant, so don’t be embarrassed I got you.
Living On-campus
On-Campus means living in college or universities apartments , dorm life. Most campus have several options and spaces in selecting a dorm that is perfect for you.
To find on-campus housing visit your school’s website , from there you can choose which of the options available fits your preference and budget.
Living Off-campus
Off-campus housing means living outside college, living on apartments around the university or college you attend. This can also mean living with family or family friend.
To find off-campus housing near your school, just google off campus housing + your school name, you can also do the same on facebook.
Start packing
You finally found a place to stay, next thing is to start packing early to remember all you need to take with you. If you need help with a travel list, check my blog on Study Abroad list.

Discuss mode of communication with loved ones.
While being away from home, it’s a guarantee that you will be lonely before you get used to a new environment. To help you get through this you should make sure you have researched and let a way out with family on how they can reach you.
The technology now allows us to communicate even if we are thousands of miles from home. You can choose from WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, FaceTime, etc
- Spend quality time with family and friends
- Say goodbye
